Showing love and gratitude to Cookie Washington, artist and curator of Celebrating Black Mermaids: From Africa To America, and all the artists and supporters who made the grand opening a huge success.

I participated in the exhibition in 2012, and was equally honored to be a part of the opening event at City Gallery at Joe Riley Waterfront Park in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday, May 27, 2023. This magnificent exhibition is a “must experience,” that digs deep into the theme of Black Mermaids from diverse creative, cultural, spiritual and personal perspectives.

My contribution to the exhibition included performing an excerpt from my poem “African Mermaid” (Afro Waters) surrounded by inspiring art and people, who also share a unique connection to Black Mermaids.

Love and gratitude to you all for allowing me to present “African Mermaid,” a poem that traveled in my heart from Senegal, West Africa to Brooklyn, New York.

Check out the review in Charleston City Paper: https://charlestoncitypaper.com/2023/05/29/review-black-mermaids-tells-afrocentric-inspired-stories/ and please spread the word about the exhibition!

Support the arts!

Love and gratitude,
