“Now that you have the back story to how we came to work together, the story for this song becomes a little simpler. I had been working with Abiodun Oyewole, with Gokh-bi System, with Massamba Diop and Barou Sall for many years when I met Moctar, Baidy and Ibrahima Sall of Bideew Bou Bess. By some very great luck a poet friend of mine introduced me to Tantra Zawadi by including me in a poetry festival with her. We immediately became great friends and three months later she was on the next trip to Senegal as part of our Senegal-America Project. It took me all of two minutes of hearing her poetry to know that I wanted to invite her to be part of this work we were doing. Not long after returning from Senegal I invited Tantra and Abiodun to be part of what I hoped would be our next CD recording. I was imaging a song that would address our wondrous humanity, so I asked both of them to take on the question “Who Are We?” Their answers and my sound track became the song “The African Embrace.” We all realized we had gone beyond any one identity and headed right for our human beginnings in Africa. Once again the music includes a wide diversity of people, not so much by design, but by our shared vision that we are truly all connected.”
